Abstract
This study investigates the integration of circular economy (CE) principles into healthcare waste management (HCWM). The study employs a case study methodology in Beja Hospital in Portugal, leveraging qualitative data from interviews and document analysis. A systems thinking approach is used to understand the complex interactions between different stakeholders in the waste management system. Key findings highlight the lack of framework do adopt circular economy actions and a lack of communication between the healthcare sector stakeholders. The study identifies barriers to implementing sustainable waste management practices in healthcare settings and outlines strategies to overcome them. Recommendations for enhancing regulatory frameworks, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and rethinking sustainable alternatives for the healthcare sector. This work contributes to the understanding of sustainable waste management in healthcare and offers practical insights for practice improvement.
