Abstract

This thesis examines the rapid rise of Chinese outbound tourism and its implications for Danish destinations by focusing on Chinese Free Independent Travellers (FITs) visiting smaller locations, using Vejle Municipality as a single-case study. Guided by the push-pull framework and the Travel Career Pattern, it explores travellers’ motivations (push) alongside destination attributes and strategies (pull). The analysis draws on six qualitative interviews with stakeholders split between tourism support functions and tourism service and product providers in Vejle. Findings indicate that Chinese FITs in Vejle are less individual and flexible than commonly portrayed in the literature, with many trips pre-planned in cooperation with tour operators. Core travel motives are novelty, autonomy, and self-development through host-site involvement. On the pull side, Vejle’s current strategy has increased Chinese visitation, yet market development is slow. The municipality offers nature, attractions, and gastronomy that align with Chinese demand, but these assets could be further developed. Varied levels of “China-readiness” and a generally negative mindset among some providers hinder progress, creating a vicious circle of few visitors, limited experience, and low readiness. Overall, the destination aligns with the motives of novelty and self-development, but falls short on autonomy due to limited online booking options, knowledge and language barriers, and visa constraints. The thesis recommends a more targeted focus on tour operators, expanding online bookable activities and pre-planned packages, and strengthening collaboration within the local visit-organisation and across Nordic destinations, as Chinese FITs often treat the Nordics as a single trip.
