Abstract
Why does the Arctic matter to China? This thesis answers that question by applying neoclassical realism as described by Ripsman, Norrin, and Taliferro, an approach that links international pressures with domestic conditions and leaders’ perceptions to explain state behavior. The study begins with an introduction to the Arctic and China’s involvement in the region. It then sets out the methodology, explains the theoretical framework and its key variables, and presents the main analysis, followed by the conclusion. Using this framework, the thesis identifies and explains the principal factors that make the Arctic significant for China and how these factors interact.
