Abstract

There is a global need to expand infrastructure to support economic growth in less developed regions. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) estimates that the Asia-Pacific alone requires an additional $1.7 trillion every year for infrastructure. This leaves a significant funding gap. In response, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and newer lenders such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the New Development Bank (NDB) are financing projects. This thesis examines China’s motives for development projects in Laos and Cambodia. Using a multi-theoretical approach (drawing on several academic perspectives), it looks beyond individual projects and places them within a broader picture to clarify Beijing’s ambitions and goals in the region.
