Abstract

This thesis investigates why Afghan children enter the labor force by examining parents’ decisions in a context shaped by decades of conflict, poverty, and an uneven education system. Using a case study design, it reviews Afghanistan’s historical and social background, international and national legal definitions and regulations on childhood, education and labor, and outlines the education system and household economic conditions. The analysis is guided by two theoretical lenses: a general perspective that situates child labor as a long‑standing phenomenon, and the Baland–Robinson Child Labor Efficiency framework to understand parental choices under constraint. The study also documents working children’s aspirations and views on early employment, emphasizing education’s potential to alter life trajectories. Specific findings are presented later in the thesis and are not included in this excerpt; here the aim, research design, theoretical framework, and analytical themes are set out.
