Abstract

This master’s thesis examines how digital archiving—preserving digital records so they remain accessible over time—is being put into practice in Iceland at both national and municipal levels. The analysis combines existing data from the National Archives of Iceland with new interviews with archivists and records managers (people responsible for managing official records) working outside the National Archives. The study finds that more organizations that are legally required to transfer records are now sending digital material to the National Archives. However, Iceland is still far from being able to preserve all public data digitally for the long term. Success depends on three factors: sufficient funding, professional recordkeeping practices, and clear communication and guidance. At present, regional archives lack the infrastructure and staff needed to carry out digital transfers. The thesis identifies a clear need to reconsider the laws governing municipal archiving.
