Abstract
This thesis explores a sustainable transformation of a 20th-century postal service building in Hillerød, aiming to create a new residential neighborhood and cultural area that reconnects with the city fabric. The building tradition of the 20th century, rooted in postwar principles, brings both qualities and challenges. Modern transformations face significant obstacles, including high operational energy, rigid structures, and poor indoor environmental conditions due to hazardous materials. The project investigates how to balance the material impact of the transformation while addressing thermal challenges inherent in 20th-century building practices. A life cycle assessment is utilized to evaluate the impacts of various materials, aiming to achieve an optimal balance between operational energy and material impact, while preserving the narrative and cultural values of the Postal Service Building.
