Abstract

This thesis explores how an agile software team can explain project risks and their causes using causal mapping. Conducted as an action case over five months, the study collaborated with a SAFe-practicing team in a Danish bank. To capture differing perspectives, a causal map was constructed for each of the team’s six roles. Data were triangulated through ten semi-structured interviews, observations of a sprint retrospective and a PI-planning meeting, and reviews of prior risk documentation. The role-specific maps were refined through individual feedback sessions and their applicability discussed in a workshop. The maps provided a dynamic, systematic view of interrelated risks and highlighted similarities and differences across roles. The team saw potential uses for the maps as tools for knowledge sharing, a starting point for documenting risks, post-evaluation and discussion during retrospectives, and more convincing communication of risks to management compared with traditional risk lists. The thesis emphasizes perceptions and explanations of risks rather than quantitative probability assessment.
