Abstract

This thesis investigates the role of university business incubation in Poland’s economic development, focusing on the country’s largest network, Akademickie Inkubatory Przedsiębiorczości (AIP). Motivated by Poland’s relatively weak performance in knowledge economy and innovation rankings despite hosting a large UBI network, it asks how and to what extent incubators—particularly AIP—contribute to knowledge creation, innovation, and regional and national development, and how they are positioned within Poland’s National Innovation System (NIS). The work develops a theoretical framework on the knowledge economy, development, NIS, and business incubation, and applies it to a case study of Poland and its regions. It assesses national and regional knowledge and innovation performance, reviews regional strategies to strengthen innovativeness (including Smart Specializations), and analyzes the AIP model through a theoretical incubation lens, mapping its interactions and role within the NIS. Theories and collected data are cross-analyzed to provide an integrated picture and to clarify whether Poland’s innovation challenges are nationwide or vary by region. Specific findings and implications are presented in the thesis conclusions but are not included in this excerpt.
