Abstract
This thesis examines how user-driven innovation, with patients as an active resource, can be translated into the development of an ICT-based communication solution for chronic conditions, exemplified by severe obesity. The work is motivated by the growing burden of lifestyle-related disease, the need for long-term follow-up, and an emphasis on empowerment and patient education. Theoretical framing includes the Technology Model, STS (Science, Technology, Society), and a maturity model. The study employs qualitative methods—focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and video observation (with ethical considerations)—alongside interaction design approaches such as contextual design, paper-based prototyping, usability testing, and heuristic evaluation. Requirements and design were structured using Use Cases and UML, and an electronic prototype was developed with a technical partner, drawing on web 2.0 and open-source ideas.
