Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to develop an urban design toolkit (the Bentobox) for professional users. The toolkit is meant to work as a problem-oriented and forward-looking framework that can guide physical transformations in Brøndby Strand Parkerne. The Bentobox translates complex social and spatial conditions, as well as responses to current challenges, into modular components. These modules can be combined in different ways and used as building blocks for a balanced and solid basis for new interventions in the area. The thesis examines how Brøndby Strand Parkerne – a large social housing estate built according to modernist planning principles in the 1960s–70s in the Greater Copenhagen Area – has changed over time, and how its social and spatial structure functions today. The project looks at different types of public spaces, welfare institutions, places connected to local communities, wayfinding and orientation, the relationships between private and shared spaces, and residents’ sense of belonging. The work is carried out at several scales: from analysis of the entire site (1:2000), through typological units (1:500), to smaller urban elements (1:400–1:50). Methodologically, the thesis combines mapping, fieldwork, desktop analysis, data research, literature review, 3D modelling of the site, and comparative typological analysis. This approach leads to the creation of an “Atlas of Spatial Typologies”, which gathers an analytical understanding of key spatial elements and how they influence human behaviour in the urban environment. The knowledge built through the Atlas is then connected with the specific local challenges identified in Brøndby Strand Parkerne. On this basis, the main outcome is developed: the Bentobox. It is created through an iterative process in which analysis and design continuously inform each other. The Bentobox consists of individual strategies that can be combined and reinforce one another across different professional fields. The toolkit is flexible and aims to promote inclusion while leaving room for community participation and local decision-making. It brings together area-specific challenges, everyday social life across diverse communities, and spatial qualities in strategies that support the transformation of modernist housing estates into more inclusive, resilient, and liveable environments.
Formålet med dette speciale er at udvikle et bydesign-værktøj (Bentoboxen) til professionelle brugere. Værktøjet fungerer som en problemløsende og fremadrettet ramme, der kan bruges som grundlag for fysiske forandringer i Brøndby Strand Parkerne. Bentoboxen oversætter komplekse sociale og rumlige forhold samt reaktioner på nutidens udfordringer til modulopbyggede byggeklodser. Disse moduler kan kombineres på forskellige måder og dermed bruges til at opbygge et balanceret og solidt grundlag for nye indgreb i området. Specialet undersøger, hvordan Brøndby Strand Parkerne – et stort almennyttigt boligområde bygget efter modernistiske planlægningsprincipper i 1960’erne og 70’erne i Storkøbenhavn – har udviklet sig over tid, og hvordan dets sociale og rumlige struktur fungerer i dag. Projektet ser blandt andet på forskellige typer af offentlige rum, velfærdsinstitutioner, steder knyttet til lokale fællesskaber, orientering og wayfinding, forholdet mellem private og fælles områder samt beboernes oplevelse af tilhørsforhold. Arbejdet foregår på flere skalaniveauer: fra analyse af hele området (1:2000), over typologiske enheder (1:500), til mindre byrumselementer (1:400–1:50). Metodisk kombinerer specialet kortlægning, feltstudier, skrivebordsanalyse, data- og litteraturstudier, 3D-modellering af området og sammenlignende typologiske analyser. Denne tilgang munder ud i et “Atlas over rumlige typologier”, som samler en analytisk forståelse af centrale rumlige elementer og deres betydning for menneskers adfærd i bymiljøet. Den viden, der opbygges gennem Atlaset, kobles med de lokale udfordringer, der er identificeret i Brøndby Strand Parkerne. På den baggrund udvikles hovedproduktet: Bentoboxen. Den bliver til gennem en iterativ proces, hvor analyse og design hele tiden påvirker hinanden. Bentoboxen består af enkeltstående strategier, der kan kombineres og styrke hinanden på tværs af forskellige faglige felter. Værktøjet er fleksibelt og skal både fremme inklusion og give plads til lokalt engagement og medbestemmelse. Det samler områdespecifikke udfordringer, lokalt hverdagsliv på tværs af forskellige beboergrupper og rumlige kvaliteter i strategier, der kan støtte omdannelsen af modernistiske boligområder til mere inkluderende, robuste og levende bymiljøer.
