Abstract

This thesis explores how to transform an initial idea for an online fashion community, Fashionality, into a formal design description that can be communicated to developers. Motivated by the rise of Web 2.0 and the influence of fashion blogs and style galleries, we analyze the genre and online fashion ecology to position the service. Guided by user-centered design and the lens of information ecologies, we identify and involve lead users through interviews and a workshop, and translate insights into site maps, wireframes, prototypes, and scenarios that illustrate key use cases such as faceted search, virtual wardrobes, wishlists, buying and selling, and mobile and blog integration via an open API. A central concern is the digitization of clothing: we outline cataloging and search structures and argue for a robust database capable of handling garment complexity. We also discuss motivational elements, including sign-up flows, content contribution, and following and voting features, to encourage participation and growth. The work consolidates Fashionality’s core functions and reflects on the reciprocal relationship between research and design; no large-scale implementation or evaluation is presented in this excerpt.
