Abstract
When classmates do not understand asthma, it can harm the well-being of children who have it. Many feel frustrated about their medicine and left out of social activities. In human–computer interaction (HCI), the study of how people use technology, most work builds mobile tools to track symptoms or teaches patients about their condition; very few aim to support inclusion among peers. In this study, we present Breathe Out, a breath-controlled interactive game to help children learn about asthma. It was designed using principles from the "Five Characteristics of Learning Through Play" model, a framework for effective playful learning. We evaluated Breathe Out with 47 children, 17% of whom had asthma. We found that the game taught both children with and without asthma about the disease. Our findings highlight the potential of technology to spark conversations about asthma, which may help children with asthma feel more included among their peers.
