Beyond Financing - The Power of Backers as Consumers in Reward-Based Crowdfunding

Abstract

This thesis examines reward-based crowdfunding (RBCF) as a growing phenomenon in consumer culture and addresses a knowledge gap on how backers influence projects and final products beyond providing funds. Drawing on a theoretical framework of consumption and power, it analyzes power relations within RBCF. Empirically, it employs a qualitative design with six individual, semi-structured interviews with experienced backers and creators, analyzed through thematic coding. The findings indicate that backers participate in the immaterial production process of projects and products, thereby shaping outcomes beyond financing. In the backer–creator relationship, power resides largely with backers, and the collective “crowd” exerts substantial influence through dynamic norms and expectations that emerge, shift, and are reproduced within communities. Creators have limited ability to alter these norms and must comply to succeed; non-compliance can lead to serious and lasting reputational damage. Both backers and creators engage in (self-)discipline, making the field highly regulated without a central authority as communities govern themselves. The thesis concludes that creators seeking success in RBCF must actively participate in relevant communities and maintain relationships with backers to understand and continually adapt to the evolving norms that shape this space.

Dette speciale undersøger belønningsbaseret crowdfunding (RBCF) som et voksende fænomen i forbrugerkulturen og adresserer en videnmangel om, hvordan backere påvirker projekter og de endelige produkter ud over at bidrage økonomisk. Med udgangspunkt i et teoretisk rammeværk om forbrug og magt analyseres magtrelationer i RBCF. Empirisk anvendes et kvalitativt design bestående af seks individuelle, semistrukturerede interviews med erfarne backere og skabere, som er analyseret ved tematisk kodning. Resultaterne peger på, at backere indgår i den immaterielle produktionsproces af projekter og produkter og dermed påvirker udfaldet ud over finansiering. I relationen mellem backere og skabere er magten i høj grad placeret hos backerne, og særligt den kollektive “crowd” udøver betydelig indflydelse gennem dynamiske normer og forventninger, der opstår, ændres og reproduceres i fællesskaberne. Skabere har begrænsede muligheder for at ændre disse normer og må efterleve dem for at få succes; manglende efterlevelse kan medføre alvorlig og varig skade på deres omdømme. Både backere og skabere udøver derfor (selv)disciplin, hvilket gør feltet stærkt reguleret uden central myndighed, idet fællesskaberne regulerer sig selv. Specialet konkluderer, at skabere, som vil lykkes i RBCF, aktivt må deltage i relevante fællesskaber og vedligeholde relationer til backere for at forstå og løbende tilpasse sig de normer, som former dette rum.
