Abstract
This thesis, developed with Boligselskabet Sjælland, explores how to design better housing for the future in a new district in eastern Roskilde that combines social housing, other homes, shops, and offices. Drawing on Townscape (Cullen, 1961), The Image of the City (Lynch, 1970), Soft City (Sim, 2019), and Vandkunsten’s five points for better future living, it asks whether today’s cities can achieve the level of density they need while still offering the everyday quality found in Vandkunsten’s low-rise, high-density housing. Through a design study at three scales—the Town, the Neighbourhood, and the Home—the project shows why holistic, multi-scale thinking matters to arrive at a proposal that is both practical and innovative. From a sustainable, philosophical, and socialist perspective, the final proposal points to a direction for the future of social housing and adds concrete examples to the debate about what residents can wish for and expect in new urban areas. The aim is a better future and a more diverse urban landscape.
