Abstract
This master’s thesis in Mobilities and Urban Design at Aalborg University explores the airport as a lived, emotional, and spatial experience. Drawing on psychogeography (McDonough, 2002) and the idea of affective atmospheres (Adey, 2008), it treats the airport not as an empty backdrop but as overlapping moods and settings shaped by people, things, and context. From a pragmatic standpoint, the study uses mixed methods: surveys, visual ethnography, mappings, observations, netnography (analysis of Twitter, websites, and forums), and architectural analysis. These methods are applied in a case study of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). The literature review is organized around three themes: place, design and the passenger; affective atmospheres; and airport situations. The analysis presents "airport situation" illustrations that describe the different atmospheres encountered along the journey from check-in to the boarding gate. The thesis ends with a concluding chapter and recommendations for future research.
