Abstract
Air cargo is a vital but often overlooked part of aviation. According to IATA (International Air Transport Association), air trade accounts for over one third of the world’s trade by product value. Delivering high-quality goods at competitive prices across the globe is central to economic growth. Establishing a cargo operation at an airport brings challenges, but with thorough analysis and a clear strategy it can work and contribute to the airport’s overall economy. This thesis focuses on Nanaimo International Airport in Nanaimo, Vancouver, British Columbia, a relatively small airport now expanding after 108% growth over six years. It examines whether developing an air cargo sector is a realistic and viable strategy to improve the airport’s economic performance during expansion, and identifies the key considerations and steps involved.
