Abstract
This project concerns the application of method 6.3.3 and 6.3.4 from DS/EN 1993-1-1 on steel elements that are subjected to pressure and bending. Method 6.3.3 provides an analytical solution to verifying the resistance of such members, and requires a constant cross-section. The construction of steel frames often includes members that have a varying cross-section in order to increase the bearing capacity of the joints. The verification of resistance of such members refer to the usage of method 6.3.4. In this report two types of steel members are verified using both method 6.3.3 and 6.3.4, one of which is beyond the scope of application for 6.3.3. This includes a discussion of the choice of boundary conditions in order to compare the two.
