Efter den tyske genforening i 1990 blussede debatten om, hvad det vil sige at være tysk, op igen. Begreber som nation og Heimat (følelse af hjem og tilhørsforhold) har vist sig svære at afklare. Afhandlingen præsenterer to bøger, der hver giver et bud på, hvordan nation og Heimat kan tænkes på ny – men deres løsninger er meget forskellige. Hos Büscher er selve diskussionen næsten umulig: Alt er sagt før, og historiske sår gør det svært at komme videre.
