Abstract

Og hvilken model ville have passet bedst?

This thesis examines Romania’s first decade after the 1989 Revolution. It asks four clear questions about the country’s political and economic transition: When did the transition start? When did it end? Which of the available transition models did Romania follow? And which model would have been the best fit? Here, “transition” refers to the broad shift in political and economic systems after 1989. To address these questions, the study analyzes both the intentions and the practical capacities of the new political leadership, and it traces the key political and economic developments throughout the 1990s. By comparing leadership goals with what was possible and what actually happened, the paper clarifies how Romania’s transition unfolded over its first post-revolution decade.
