Abstract
Through a change in the legislation of environmental protection it is possible for municipalities to protect the quality of groundwater against pesticide contamination on their own initiative. The objective of this project is to find a method to assess if areas are vulnerable to pesticide contamination. This is investigated by using data from existing groundwater drillings that are already assessed to be contaminated by pesticides to find correlations and differences, and then compare these with all groundwater drillings, contaminated and non-contaminated. In order to answer the following hypotheses: Are groundwater drillings located in areas with sand layers vulnerable to pesticide contamination? Are groundwater drillings that extract water from younger reservoirs, i.e. close to the surface and therefore less protected, more vulnerable towards pesticide contamination? Will there be a smaller vulnerability to pesticide contamination of the groundwater in areas where there is a thick protecting clay layer? To get a quantitative survey it is necessary to look at data from different locations with different geology. The locations that have been chosen are the municipalities of Aalborg and Herning. The parameters that are necessary to investigate in different areas is the deposits and soil conditions, type of aquifer, filter depth, the groundwater recharge, the water type, thickness of protecting clay layers and condition of the drill. The results from the comparison of the parameters are used to determine how to identify vulnerable areas to pesticide contamination.
