Abstract

The trend of producing energy from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is increasing greatly. Indeed RES has the capability to fulfil global need of power energy. This leads to the objective of building future power system entirely based on renewable sources. Since RES, such as wind power exhibits non linearities and uncertainties in power production due to wind variations and prediction errors. Therefore, a controller system is required to effectively govern and communicate production and consumption of the wind power supply. This research focuses on microgrid scenario of low voltage grid for remote control of a wind turbine through IEC 61850 MMS. In order to control wind power energy production, MMS messages must be delivered with reliable information to controller to achieve its optimum efficiency. This raises a challenge to assess information reliability and evaluate controller performance. The thesis models IEC 61850 MMS protocol over both TCP & UDP and analyze information reliability and con- troller performance over various imperfect communication networks.
