Abstract
As more electricity comes from renewable energy sources, there is growing interest in building future power systems entirely on renewables. Wind power is variable and uncertain because wind changes and forecasts are imperfect, so control systems are needed to coordinate production and consumption. This thesis studies a low-voltage microgrid in which a wind turbine is remotely controlled using IEC 61850 MMS, a communication protocol used in power systems. To control wind power effectively, messages must be delivered reliably to the controller; otherwise efficiency is lost. The thesis models IEC 61850 MMS over both TCP and UDP and evaluates information reliability and controller performance under various non-ideal communication networks.
