Abstract

This thesis explores artificial intelligence (AI) and the expectations and predictions surrounding it. As a case study, it examines IBM’s Watson, a “cognitive” technology that drew global attention by winning the Jeopardy! quiz show against human contestants. The central question is whether AI can develop expertise. To address this, I explain what expertise means in humans—such as deep knowledge, experience, and sound judgment—and then examine whether these elements are present in Watson. This approach assumes that today’s AI is often designed to model aspects of human cognition, which is why Watson is described as cognitive technology. The thesis uses this comparison to assess the current abilities and limits of AI in developing expertise.
