Abstract

This project analyzes and tests a commercially available analog guitar effect, the 'Pharaoh' fuzz by Black Art Toneworks. To understand how the pedal works, its circuit was studied using a schematic and SPICE simulations (circuit-simulation software). Based on many recorded test signals, a digital model of the pedal was developed. The model uses a transfer function—a mathematical mapping from input to output—to reproduce the observed signal waveforms. The developed model generates waveforms that closely match the analysis recordings. In a qualitative evaluation with two guitarists, both found the simulated pedal to be considerably similar to the original Pharaoh.
