Abstract
This thesis examines how the term ‘organic’ is articulated in Danish news media and what this articulation reveals about broader social practices around organic food consumption. Using a qualitative design, 100 news articles were collected via Infomedia. Following Kathy Charmaz’s Constructing Grounded Theory, the material underwent initial and focused coding, supported by concurrent memo writing to develop emerging ideas. Adele Clarke’s situational analysis was then applied to produce situational maps and a social worlds/arenas map, making visible the actors, relationships, and social worlds present in the material. The resulting discourses were analyzed using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis to show linguistic patterns and discourse practices associated with ‘organic’ in the media. Finally, the findings are placed in a macro-sociological perspective on postmodern society and consumption. The analysis indicates a dialectical relationship between discourse practices and social practices reflected in media portrayals of organics, offering a snapshot of how ‘organic’ is understood and used today.
