Abstract

This thesis investigates the role of institutions in shaping economic cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the Visegrád Four (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia) within the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the 17+1 cooperation platform. Against the backdrop of China’s expanding global engagement and Central and Eastern European efforts to reduce dependence on Western Europe and spur development, the study asks how institutional arrangements structure cooperation, shape incentives, and influence outcomes in China–V4 relations. It maps motivations on both the Chinese and CEE sides, situates the V4’s position and significance within the 17+1 framework, and assesses the presence and functions of institutions that govern economic exchange. The analytical approach draws on neoliberal institutionalism and Douglass North’s theory of institutions, institutional change, and economic performance, applying these in a qualitative, comparative analysis of political, economic, and social dimensions for each V4 country, alongside China’s policies toward the group and the institutional design of the 17+1 platform. The excerpt outlines the research question, scope, and theoretical method, but does not report the study’s empirical findings.
