An Exploration of Parenting Practices and Adaptation of Nigerian Immigrant Parents in Denmark

Abstract

This study examines how Nigerian immigrant parents in Denmark adapt to everyday life, with a particular focus on parenting practices and cultural adjustment. Over the past decade, Denmark has had net immigration, and Nigerians make up a notable share of African immigrants. The aim is to understand how families navigate this transition, including the parenting styles they choose and how they adjust culturally. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with three participants. Topics included acculturation (adapting to a new culture), views on parenting in Denmark and Nigeria, the influence of Danish norms, cultural adjustments, language challenges, and cultural identity. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis (grouping recurring ideas into themes and sub-themes). Key themes were acculturation, respect, parenting alone, education, discipline, and language. The participants’ narratives show how immigrant families blend and reinterpret their cultural roots in a Danish context. The study points to practical implications and outlines recommendations for further research.

Dette studie undersøger, hvordan nigerianske forældre, der er immigreret til Danmark, tilpasser sig hverdagslivet med særligt fokus på forældreskab og kulturel tilpasning. I løbet af det seneste årti har Danmark haft nettomigration, og nigerianere udgør en bemærkelsesværdig del af afrikanske tilflyttere. Formålet er at forstå, hvordan familierne håndterer overgangen, herunder hvilke forældrestile de vælger, og hvordan de justerer sig kulturelt. Undersøgelsen bygger på semistrukturerede interviews med tre deltagere. Samtalerne dækkede bl.a. akkulturation (tilpasning til en ny kultur), syn på forældreskab i Danmark og Nigeria, den danske kulturs indflydelse, kulturelle justeringer, sproglige udfordringer og kulturel identitet. Interviewene blev analyseret ved tematisk analyse (at samle tilbagevendende ideer i temaer og undertemaer). Centrale temaer var akkulturation, respekt, alene-forældreskab, uddannelse, disciplin og sprog. Deltagernes fortællinger giver indblik i, hvordan immigrantfamilier på hver deres måde blander og nyt fortolker deres kulturelle rødder i en dansk sammenhæng. Studiet peger på praktiske implikationer og skitserer anbefalinger til videre forskning.
