Abstract
This thesis asks whether President Donald Trump’s 2020 “impeachment victory speech” is chiefly an emotional outburst or a calculated deployment of linguistic tactics, and examines how the speech seeks to defend and consolidate political authority. Situating the case within the mutually dependent relationship between politicians and mass media—and against the backdrop of earlier presidential scandals (Johnson, Nixon, Clinton)—the study conducts a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the speech transcript. The analysis is structured by Fairclough’s ten-question model and draws on theories of lexical style and negativization, normalization and the Overton window, masculine victimhood, and language and power.
