Abstract

This thesis examines how staying in a Danish asylum centre is experienced by asylum seekers and mental health professionals in the asylum field, motivated by the recent influx of refugees and limited prior research. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis of data collected during a three-month internship in a Danish asylum centre—through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with two asylum seekers and two mental health professionals—we identify three overarching themes: power in the asylum system, living in limbo, and manoeuvring the social arena of the asylum centre. Across themes, participants describe pervasive uncertainty about the asylum case, limited agency, and various ways of coping with these conditions. While largely consistent with existing research, the study adds novel insight into the role of resident translators and the power they may hold, highlighting areas for further study.
