Abstract
This master’s thesis investigates alternative notification systems for context-aware smartphone applications. It combines activity recognition and context awareness to determine when and how to inform users in the least disruptive way. Three different notification types were designed and implemented on a Samsung Google Nexus S using MIT App Inventor 2. A user study evaluated their suitability across three everyday scenarios: at a bus stop, at work, and at home. In each scenario, participants ranked the notifications by perceived practicality, and post-test interviews examined how they worked and whether they had positive or negative motivational effects. Findings indicate that no single notification fits all contexts; different notifications are preferable in different situations and can influence motivation both positively and negatively. The work underscores the need for context- and activity-aware systems to adapt notification strategies to the user’s current situation.

Projektet kombinerer aktivitetsgenkendelse og kontekstbevidsthed for at afgøre, hvornår og hvordan brugere bør informeres på en mindst mulig forstyrrende måde. Der blev designet og implementeret tre forskellige notifikationstyper på en Samsung Google Nexus S med MIT App Inventor 2. Et brugerstudie evaluerede deres anvendelighed i tre hverdagsscenarier: ved busstoppestedet, på arbejdet og derhjemme.
