Abstract
This thesis examines how digitized cultural heritage, with a focus on the Maya Madrid Codex, can be meaningfully reconnected to contemporary Maya communities. It critiques virtual repatriation practices that prioritize access over relational engagement, thereby perpetuating institutional control and colonial dynamics. Using a techno-anthropological mixed-methods design, the study combines document and archival analysis of the codices and existing digital collections with participatory co-design and ethnographic engagement alongside Maya educators and digital activists. Through this process, it develops an interactive storytelling and game-inspired prototype that reimagines the Madrid Codex as a relational, pedagogical medium for cultural continuity and situated meaning-making. Conceptually, the work draws on constructivist accounts of meaning-making, relational ethics, and decolonial approaches.
