Addressing the socio-political issue of working conditions in tourism through technology tools: The Las Kellys initiative

Abstract
Over the past two decades, many travel-technology tools have been created to help travelers and industry stakeholders plan better, reshaping links between technology, tourism, and society. This study examines how one such tool—developed by Las Kellys, a Spanish organization of hotel housekeeping workers—relates to socio-political questions about working conditions in the travel sector. Using an exploratory, mixed-methods design, we conducted an interview with the association and collected survey responses from hotel employees in management roles. Findings show that the Las Kellys booking platform plans to list hotels only if they meet criteria aligned with labor regulations. These proposed criteria address the main challenges identified in hotel staff working conditions. The association’s strong union presence within hotels is seen by Las Kellys as a key factor for the initiative’s potential success. At the same time, the analysis points to issues that require careful consideration: how the initiative engages with hoteliers, and potential inequity risks for hotel businesses that are not listed. Because the booking site was still under development during the research, the study offers only a partial view of the issue. Even so, it introduces a new perspective within digital tourism studies and calls for further research.
I løbet af de sidste to årtier er mange rejseteknologiske værktøjer blevet udviklet til at hjælpe både rejsende og branchen med bedre planlægning, og de har ændret forbindelserne mellem teknologi, turisme og samfund. Dette studie undersøger, hvordan et sådant værktøj—udviklet af Las Kellys, en spansk organisation af hotelrengøringsmedarbejdere—hænger sammen med samfundsmæssige og politiske spørgsmål om arbejdsvilkår i rejsebranchen.
