Abstract

Når vindkraft fylder mere i elsystemet, skaber vindens naturlige variation udfordringer for driften. Denne afhandling undersøger energilagringssystemer (ESS) – især batterilagring (BES) – som en måde at gøre vindkraftanlæg (Wind Power Plants, WPP) mere fleksible og driftssikre uden at reducere produktionen. Vi gennemgår, hvad WPP'er skal kunne for at deltage i elnettet, og peger på de typer tjenester, et ESS kan levere for at opfylde disse krav. Derefter vurderer vi den mulige rentabilitet af sådanne tjenester. Med en Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), et simuleringsværktøj i realtid, afprøver vi, om BES faktisk kan levere de udvalgte tjenester under realistiske forhold. Til sidst analyserer vi virkelige data om vindproduktion og markedspriser for at estimere fordelene for en WPP ved at levere sådanne tjenester, og vi medregner batterisystemets omkostninger og forventede levetid.

As wind power becomes a larger part of the electricity system, its natural variability creates operational challenges. This thesis examines Energy Storage Systems (ESS)—especially battery energy storage (BES)—as a way to make Wind Power Plants (WPPs) more flexible and reliable without reducing generation. We review what WPPs must do to participate in the grid and identify the types of services an ESS could provide to support those requirements. We then assess the potential profitability of these services. Using a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), we test whether BES can actually deliver the selected services under realistic operating conditions. Finally, we analyze real wind production and market price data to estimate the benefits for a WPP from providing such services, and we account for the cost and expected lifetime of the battery system.
