Abstract
This master’s thesis examines adaptive reuse—giving a historic building a new purpose while respecting its heritage—through the case of the former Carlsberg brewery in Copenhagen, known for some of Denmark’s finest industrial architecture. After Carlsberg moved production in 2008, the area has been developed into a mixed neighborhood with housing, industry, culture, and institutions, where many historic buildings are being integrated. The project proposes transforming the 1923 Machine Central into a culture house for residents and visitors of the new Carlsberg district. The design is guided by the district’s new plan and by the building’s heritage “listing” evaluation by The Danish Agency for Culture. By introducing carefully chosen new functions that fit the existing complex, the Machine Central can continue to act as a power station—now for cultural events—and become a welcoming place where people of different ages, interests, and social backgrounds meet and build connections.
