Abstract
Acoustic comfort in dwellings is often underprioritized and appears to have worsened as modern interiors favor hard surfaces. This project investigates how to classify acoustic indoor comfort in contemporary homes. The study reviewed current standards and regulations and examined how well standardized room-acoustic parameters describe perceived sound. To collect objective data, a measurement program was developed and room impulse responses were recorded in accordance with ISO 3382-2 across 45 rooms in 15 dwellings. In parallel, a questionnaire captured residents’ subjective ratings, yielding 15 responses. The dataset was analyzed using multiple factor analysis to link objective measures and subjective perceptions. Findings indicate substantial redundancies among standardized parameters and show that room absorption correlates more strongly with acoustic satisfaction than reverberation time, a relationship not reflected in existing standards. A larger database is required to establish a robust classification of acoustic comfort.
