Abstract

This project explores whether abstract data visualization can make relationships between video games visible and understandable to non-experts by using player reviews as a data source. Steam reviews are processed with sentiment analysis (including VADER) and topic or document embeddings (Word2Vec/Doc2Vec) to produce numeric representations, which are then examined through dimensionality reduction (PCA and t-SNE). Drawing on Gestalt principles and the Bouba/Kiki effect, an abstract, shader-based visualization is designed to highlight similarities in gameplay, themes, and audiences. A small, cross-background user test evaluates whether the visualization helps viewers detect patterns and groupings. Findings suggest that reviews may appear highly similar across different titles when compared via sentiment and topic embeddings, and that the abstract visualization can reveal otherwise overlooked relationships. However, the small number of participants and the chosen abstraction approach limit the validity of the conclusions, indicating the need for larger studies and further refinement.
