Abstract

This is a competition proposal for a new primary school in Aalesund, Norway. The design aims to provide an inspiring, healthy, and inclusive learning environment while becoming a natural part of the local community. It highlights phenomenological qualities—how pupils and teachers experience space through light, sound, materials, and movement—and tectonic qualities—the visible expression of structure and craftsmanship in how the building is put together. By aligning these spatial and constructional aspects with local values and the character of the place, the project seeks to create a school that feels welcoming, is easy to understand and use, and reflects Aalesund’s identity.
