Abstract

This thesis develops a design proposal for a psychiatric care facility in Aalborg, Denmark. The project explores how to make the architectural setting feel less like an institution and more like a humane, non-hierarchical environment that supports healing and can reduce the length of hospital stays. To do this, it first analyzes what characterizes institutional spaces and then translates the opposite qualities into spatial and organizational strategies. The proposal applies an evidence-based design approach, meaning that design decisions are guided by research. Throughout, functional, aesthetic, and technical requirements are addressed together through an integrated design process to create a setting that is practical, welcoming, and safe.
