Abstract

Transitioning to a circular economy requires reverse logistics—systems that move used products back through the value chain—so that value can be preserved through repair, reuse, refurbishment, and life extension. In Denmark, end-of-life household appliances are most often processed for material recycling, even though reuse and repair could yield economic, environmental, and social benefits. This thesis examines how reverse logistics for household appliances in Denmark can be improved to better preserve and increase value across value chain actors. The study maps where and why value is lost, based on empirical data from semi-structured interviews with actors across the Danish appliance value chain, supplemented by literature review, observations, and desk research. Using Business Ecosystem Theory and a sociotechnical systems perspective (frameworks that examine how actors, technology, and organizations interact)—supported by theories of the circular economy, circular business models, and an operationalization of the value concept—the analysis shows that value loss is primarily a systemic issue. It stems from misalignment among actors rather than from technical limits. Although actors are mutually dependent, they pursue individual solutions to protect their own value creation and positions in developing reverse logistics, which leads to fragmented activities, weak partnerships, and insufficient coordination. Consumer participation is also key to making circular practices work. Current solutions, however, do not build the awareness, trust, and engagement needed for consumers to contribute effectively to value preservation. Better communication, knowledge sharing, and stronger partnerships are therefore essential to preserve both functional value (how the product works) and created value (value generated through processes and relationships). Future research should explore how consumers can be motivated and supported to take part in circular practices and thereby help extend the lifetime of household appliances.

Overgangen til en cirkulær økonomi kræver reverse logistics – altså systemer, der fører brugte produkter tilbage i værdikæden – så værdien kan bevares gennem reparation, genbrug, refurbishment (istandsættelse) og levetidsforlængelse. I Danmark bliver udtjente hårde hvidevarer i dag oftest sendt til materialegenanvendelse, selv om genbrug og reparation kan give både økonomiske, miljømæssige og sociale gevinster. Specialet undersøger, hvordan reverse logistics for hårde hvidevarer i Danmark kan forbedres, så værdien bevares og øges på tværs af aktører. Grundlaget er empiriske data fra semistrukturerede interviews med aktører i hele værdikæden, suppleret af litteraturstudier, observationer og desk research. Specialet kortlægger mekanismerne bag værditab. Med afsæt i Business Ecosystem Theory og et socioteknisk systemperspektiv (rammer, der ser på samspil mellem aktører, teknologi og organisationer) – og med støtte fra teori om cirkulær økonomi, cirkulære forretningsmodeller og en operationalisering af værdibegrebet – peger analysen på, at værditab primært skyldes systemiske misforhold mellem aktører snarere end tekniske begrænsninger. Aktørerne er gensidigt afhængige, men forfølger hver især egne løsninger for at sikre deres egen værdiskabelse og position. Resultatet er fragmenterede aktiviteter, svage partnerskaber og mangelfuld koordinering. Forbrugernes deltagelse viser sig samtidig at være afgørende for, at cirkulære praksisser lykkes. Dagens løsninger skaber dog ikke tilstrækkelig bevidsthed, tillid og engagement til, at forbrugerne effektivt kan bidrage til værdibevarelse. Derfor er bedre kommunikation, vidensdeling og stærkere partnerskaber centrale for at bevare både funktionel værdi (hvordan produktet virker) og skabt værdi (værdi skabt gennem processer og relationer). Fremtidig forskning bør undersøge, hvordan forbrugere kan motiveres og støttes til at deltage mere aktivt i cirkulære praksisser og dermed bidrage til at forlænge levetiden for hårde hvidevarer.
