Abstract

Biodiversity is experiencing a significant global decline, often referred to as the sixth mass extinction. This trend is particularly evident in highly cultivated regions such as Denmark, where natural habitats are being replaced by agricultural and urban landscapes. The decline in biodiversity affects invertebrates, including pollinators, which are essential for ecosystem functioning. As a response to this crisis, initiatives like Vild Med Vilje promote the rewilding of green spaces to support biodiversity. This study investigates the impact of Vild Med Vilje areas at Aalborg Campus on invertebrate biomass compared to traditional grass lawns and annually sown flower strips. Using a combination of pitfall traps, flight interception traps, and light trapping, invertebrate biomass and abundance were assessed over a 10-week period. Data were analyzed using Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM) with a Tweedie distribution to account for overdispersion and zero inflation. The results indicate that rewilded areas host a significantly higher invertebrate biomass compared to sown flower strips and grass lawns, supporting the hypothesis that increased habitat heterogeneity benefits invertebrate communities. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of combining multiple trapping methods to obtain a comprehensive assessment of invertebrate diversity and abundance. While larger areas were expected to support greater biomass, no clear relationship was observed, suggesting that habitat quality may play a more crucial role than area size alone. These findings reinforce the ecological value of Vild Med Vilje initiatives and suggest that even small-scale rewilding efforts can provide critical refuges for invertebrates in fragmented landscapes.
