Abstract
This thesis investigates how to communicate real-time coastal ocean data to non-expert users in marinas and coastal communities through a digital dashboard. In collaboration with SOOP (Shaping an Ocean of Possibilities) at GEOMAR, it addresses the absence of a public platform for SOOP’s low-cost sensor network by applying a Human-Centred Design process (ISO 9241-210). Guided by two research questions—identifying user requirements and translating them into a usable and accessible interface—the study employed semi-structured interviews, thematic analysis, a competitive review of existing solutions, low-fidelity prototyping, and usability testing. The process produced a dashboard prototype grounded in real user needs and established design principles; a second iteration resolved observed usability issues and incorporated features such as tabbed navigation, contextual alerts, and interactive data previews. The work offers a practical design solution and demonstrates how user-centred methods can make scientific ocean data understandable and actionable for coastal audiences.
