Abstract
This thesis examines the barriers that can influence gang members into completing or even entering an exit-program in the first place and the barriers that can have a significance for the gang members experience of the program. The objective of this thesis is to examine which barriers the gang members and professionals meet in the exit-process, and how these barriers create challenges in supporting the gang members to leave the criminal community. The thesis is based on a qualitative research design using interviews with former gang members and professionals involved in the exit initiative. In addition, this thesis uses public records from several municipalities to gather relevant material for the analysis. The analysis is based on labeling theory, subcultural theory and social learning theory. Together these theories provide a theoretical foundation for understanding the social and identity related processes in the gang and in the exit-program. Furthermore, the theories help with understanding why the barriers occur in the first place. The thesis concludes that labeling and subcultural bonds is a large reason barriers occur in an exit- program. The success of an exit-program depends on how the professionals handle social barriers and at the same time create the right framework for the gang members while going through an exit. It is concluded that barriers such as labeling, subcultural bonds and the feeling of not belonging socially have a great impact on gang members opinion, participation and successful completion in the exit-program.
