Abstract

This thesis presents a preliminary qualitative study of the values embedded in nurses’ practices around the current patient call technology at a urological ward in a major hospital in Denmark’s Capital Region. Motivated by a project proposal from the Center for IT, Medico and Telephony (CIMT) to develop a patient call application, we conducted two semi-structured interviews, one interview-to-the-double with nurses, and four observation sessions in spring 2017, guided by Value Sensitive Design and a praxiographic approach. Our analysis identifies attendance, safety, and reassurance as key values shaping nurses’ use of the existing patient call system. Using a value hierarchy, we outlined 10 design requirements to ensure a future patient call application supports these values. Findings further suggest potential benefits from enabling differentiated call types. We conclude that the relationship between patient, nurse, and call technology mediates specific behaviors, which should be actively considered when designing and implementing new patient call solutions in the ward.
