A Narrative Study of Professional Identity: How Employees at Roima Intelligence Perceive Their Professional Identities in the Context of English as Corporate Language

Abstract

This thesis examines how adopting English as a corporate language shapes employees’ sense of professional identity at Roima Intelligence. Using a qualitative, social-constructivist design, it applies narrative and discursive approaches and semi-structured interviews with current employees in Denmark and Finland spanning a parent company and a subsidiary. The aim is to identify both positive and negative consequences of a corporate language and assess their extent and duration. Findings indicate that effects vary by individual: some report little change, while others develop a parallel, context-dependent professional identity in English alongside their native-language identity. Across the two country groups, the perceived impact of English diminished over time, accompanied by a shift in employees’ stories from counter-narratives toward greater acceptance of a corporate language. At the same time, English can constrain the development of native-language professional identities, with potential costs for both individuals and the firm, and may reinforce an us-versus-them dynamic between parent and subsidiary that challenges cross-department collaboration.
