Abstract
This thesis examines the global shift toward a knowledge-based economy and explores how innovation and knowledge creation can be organized in networks across institutional actors. It asks how such networks should be designed, which institutions should participate, and how their interplay varies by context. Using a systems view and a theoretical discussion of innovation and institutional literature, the study identifies phenomena such as scalable learning and develops the “Networks of Scalable Knowledge Creation” framework within the Triple Helix model. The framework is then applied to a case study of Carlsberg’s innovation efforts in China. The case indicates that government and broader institutional support are critical enablers for multinational firms in emerging markets. Based on these insights, the thesis outlines a three-level holistic strategy for Carlsberg that leverages reverse innovation to revitalize its stagnant home market, and it proposes directions for future research at the intersection of institutional and technological innovation.
