Abstract
Wind energy has the highest installed capacity and generates the most GWh of any renewable source in the UK, and the industry continues to grow. This thesis presents a method for selecting wind turbine sites in Cornwall using a spatial multi-criteria analysis. The workflow is implemented in ESRI ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1, a geographic information system (GIS), and has four stages: (1) excluding unsuitable land, (2) resource and cost analysis, (3) selecting candidate sites with a visibility analysis (how visible turbines would be in the landscape), and (4) developing a web application that provides online access to the results. The assessment serves as a preliminary screening tool for site selection and is intended to support planning by wind developers and other interested parties.
