Abstract
The impacts of climate change due to the consumption of climate change are noticeable all around the world. Environmental goals have therefore been set up by the European Union to mitigate the effects. With the heating sector in Europe being responsible for the 40% of the total energy demand and for 30% of the carbon emissions, a lot can be gained from improving the energy efficiency and the supply of energy in this sector. Various alternatives have been examined to analyse the potential of decarbonising the heating systems in the residential sector. A comparison is made between centralised unit heating system, diversified heating systems and where possible, individual heating systems. These systems are required to be based on the use renewable energy sources. According to their primary energy supply, biomass consumption and lifetime and annual costs the feasibility of each system is analysed. The scenario planning is assisted with an hourly analysis within the EnergyPRO modelling tool. It is found that diversified heating systems are the most feasible option for supplying renewable energy based heating. Their total costs are lowest of all scenarios other scenarios and their biomass consumption is the lowest. The primary energy supply is the lowest for the individual heating scenario, followed by the all the diversified energy system scenarios.
