Abstract

This thesis assesses the feasibility of establishing a pre-sorting system for recyclable textiles and textile waste in Denmark. It builds on the current collection and sorting landscape, where NGOs and waste management companies are key actors, and aligns with the waste hierarchy. A preliminary analysis maps existing actors, required pre-sorting levels, current and projected volumes, regional distribution, capacity options, and transport choices. A cost model is developed covering variable (transport, wages) and fixed costs (rent, opening and expansion), and three scenarios are defined: adjustments to the current system, new pre-sorting facilities, and a hybrid solution. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model determines the number, location, and capacity of facilities alongside associated transport and staffing, and scenarios are evaluated using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) against criteria including CO2 emissions, total cost, excess capacity, and risk, complemented by economic feasibility and an assessment of barriers and benefits. Data sources include collaboration with relevant organizations and secondary literature. This excerpt outlines the approach and framework; specific results and recommendations appear in later chapters of the report.
