Abstract

Many developed countries grow by innovating across sectors. This study examines how innovation can strengthen Nepal’s agriculture, focusing on large cardamom. It uses the National System of Innovation (NSI) framework—which looks at how policies, institutions, and actors work together—to identify ways to improve product quality. Using qualitative methods and data from primary and secondary sources, the study finds that Nepal has strong potential to increase national income by exporting large cardamom to international markets and to improve farmers’ livelihoods. To realize this potential, product quality must meet market standards. The study highlights the need for better technology, stronger skills and knowledge, and more research and development. It also recommends consistent and effective public institutions, farmer-friendly policies, basic infrastructure, information and communication technologies (ICT), collaboration between universities and farmers, and good governance to promote innovation in the cardamom sector.
