I dette speciale undersøges det om der er forskelle og ligheder mellem gated communi-ties og bofællesskaber i forhold til at identificere, hvorfor bofællesskab som boform er accepteret i Danmark, når gated community som boform møder modstand. For at undersøge dette anvendes metoderne dokumentanalyse, interview og observation. Forskellene og lighederne undersøges i forhold til de teoretiske begreber fællesskab, tryghed, fysiske og symbolske barrierer samt fysisk planlægning. Begreberne anvendes ligeledes til at undersøges hvilken betydning de to fænomener har på samfundet, og om de er medvirkende til at øge den sociale segregation i Danmark. I gennem specialet er det fundet, at gated communities og bofællesskaber er to rela-tivt udefinerbare fænomener, som derved vanskeliggør muligheden for at konkludere noget konkret. Det kan dog konkluderes, at bofællesskaber har nogle af de samme negative konsekvenser som gated communities i forhold til at de kan fremstå ekskluderende overfor samfundet og på denne måde kan medvirke til at øge den sociale segregation. Foruden dette, tyder det på, at de fysiske barrierer, som gated communities udgøres af, har en betydning for fænomenets modstand og deraf accept i Danmark.

This thesis seeks to clarify differences and similarities between gated communities and cohousing communities. This temps to identify why cohousing as a type of accommodation is accepted in Denmark when gated community as an accommodation type is opposed against. To examine this, the following methods are used: document analysis, interview and observation. The differences and similarities are examined in relation to the theoretical concepts community, safety, physical and symbolic barriers as well as physical planning. The concepts are also used to examine which consequences the two phenomena have on the society, and whether they add to the increasing social segregation in Denmark. Throughout the thesis, it is found that gated communities and cohousing communi-ties are difficult to define which is making it difficult to draw specific conclusions. Though, it can be concluded that cohousing communities include some of the same consequences as gated communities in relation to appear excluding towards the society, and thereby add to the social segregation. In addition to this, the thesis indicates that the physical barriers, which gated communities represent, are significant to why gated communities meets resistance and lacks accept in Denmark.
